7 Mar

As a finale to our 2016/17 programme we’re going out with a bang and have Dave Southall coming to do a presentation and demo/tie some flies.

‘A Fly For All Seasons’ a presentation which covers the invertebrates on rivers & still waters throughout the year & the flies that Dave uses to imitate them followed by a Demo tying some of his most useful patterns.

Dave lives in Driffield, East Yorkshire,  close to the famous Driffield Beck chalk stream. He started fly fishing at the age of 14 but in his early 20s  was seduced by mountaineering and at the age of 40 mountain biking. As a result he had over 20 years without fly-fishing! Then in 1998  he damaged his back in a mountain bike accident and returned to his old love of fly-fishing and was once again hooked!

His passion is for river fly-fishing, particularly dry fly, using imitative patterns (often fish with CdC flies as small as size 30). Grayling are his favourite fish. He is obsessed by the search for perfect presentation of the fly, which is why he is an avid Tenkara addict. Presentation is the reason that in 2012 he became fascinated by the Italian Style of casting and is a UK Instructor . he is also passionate about protecting our rivers and is a member of the Wild Trout Trust, Grayling Society, Yorkshire Wild Life Trust and  a trustee of the East Yorkshire Rivers Trust and local coordinator for the River Flies Monitoring Initiative. In addition he is vice chairman of the Pickering Fishery Association (fishing club) and chairman of the East Yorkshire Fly Dressers club and regularly writes articles for Fly Fishing and Fly Tying Magazine and the Grayling Society Magazine. He has have fished all over the world; Austria, Slovenia, Belgium, Sweden, Poland, New Zealand, USA and Canada and has some great knowledge & insights to share.

Oh  nearly forgot… we will have our end of season Pie & Peas supper too

Wear Rivers Trust – Steve Hudson Presentation – Thursday 24 November 2016

14 Nov

Wear Rivers Trust Senior Project officer, Steve Hudson will be coming along to give us an update of the work of the trust since their last appearance back in 2013. Since then the trust have been busy removing barriers to migratory fish, building fish passes, working with farmers to reduce runoff from farm land to improve water quality, delivering European funded research projects and working with schools to educate future generations of the importance of projecting our rivers. The trust was created in 2008 and Steve was employed as the only paid member of staff in 2010. Since then the trust has seen a rapid expansion, now employing 5 full time staff and one part time education officer.

The trust relies heavily on volunteers helping with survey work, project development and practical delivery so feel free to discuss how you can help support the amazing work of the trust on Thursday 24th November.

See you all on  24th Start Time 8.00pm
